I know some builders use these for attaching the neck tenon to the body (in place of threaded inserts). I'm looking for a source for larger brass barrel nuts (5/8" dia x 3/8" l) for my workbench project.

Anybody know where I can buy these...my google search has not borne fruit. Are there other key words I might use?

TIA

Have you checked Rockler? I think they call them "cross dowels"

Funny thing, questions about locating those barrel nuts pop up quite often on these forums. They are available just about EVERYWHERE over here, but try finding good screw inserts... or try finding a fixed base router; forget it, but go into any hardware store and you have to be careful not to knock over a stack of plunge base routers! What's ther reason behind the differences in taste, people??!!!

It sometimes reminds me of that conversation in "Pulp Fiction" where John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson are in a car discussing the differences between the US and Europe; Royal with cheese, anyone? Ok, I’ll quit derailing this discussion and go do something useful…

Thanks, guys. I checked them out but they only have the smaller sizes. I'll use some new keywords and see if someone has a 5/8" diameter x 3/8" long cross dowel, barrel nut or KD connector. Some phone calls to these suppliers could also help.

I get mine from   woodcraft.com, but I don't know id they have your size. I've never seen any only 3/8 long. Mine are 5/8.

I checked the link...it's a great one and I bookmarked it for future reference. Unfortunately their items are all 10 mm (3/8") dia. I need 5/8" dia.

I'm driving to Ft. Wayne tomorrow and will stop at the local Woodcraft.

I know...it's a weird size but that's what dimension is called for on the stretchers for the bench. I called Lee Valley...they don't supply the hardware and don't have a clue where to get them...and it's their Veritas plan. Go figure!

Hey JJ,

If you cannot find a source of barrel nuts in the size you need, they are pretty easy to make yourself.

I recently built a bench and needed some really big ones so I went ahead and bought ome brass rod with the outside diameter I needed at a local hardware store.

Then I drilled a hole with the inside diameter necessary to tap the hole for the bolt size I wanted to use. I then cut the round to length and sanded the ends flat.

Brass is really easy to drill and tap and you can get really cheap taps and dies at places like Harbor Freight that work just fine in materials like brass. You don't need any cutting fluid in brass either.

Also, if you want to slot the end you can use a dremel cuttoff wheel or something.

Good Luck,

Thanks, Tom. That's my last resort if I can't locate stock items. I already located the brass rod stock. I need 6 of them and would rather not have to spend the time fabricating brass nuts. Then again, I didn't want to spend a lot of time searching for a source. As they say in "The Sopranos"..."Waddya gonna do"?

Sorry JJ, I assumed you had reversed the diameter and length.

I checked both Lowes and HD with no luck. No luck at Woodcraft but they took $100 from me anyway.

I could easily use a 3/8" nut but I really like the way these cross dowels spread the load. Plus, I already have the holes drilled to accommodate the cross dowels. They also look cooler.

JJ

I found this site on the internet, don't know if it is any use, but they have a 5/8" cross dowel listed

Metzgers, 3 minutes from my house. Many smaller hardware stores have bins of odd parts, socket head cap screws, etc.. They're typically associated in hardware stores like my local one as funiture bolts, the barrel nuts will be with the funiture bolts. If I ask for a barrel nut (or dowel nut) I'll get a blank stare, but I know exactly where there at!Jim_W38792.7405902778

I'll be all over it in the morning.

Thanks again to all for the help.
